More Lethal Re-runs

Okay, I’ve recently written about mass shootings and gun violence and about how some people consider the 2nd Amendment to be superior to “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness”, so I don’t have a lot left to add about the tragedies that just keep happening.

Even snarky old Wonkette gets serious about it:

It’s a true thing, sure, that “people kill people.” It is not a coincidence, however, that when people kill people, they kill them with guns. Guns are so, so good at killing people…. Mother Jones put together a big, terrible list of all the mass-murders of the last 30 years, and not a single one ends with, “And then a person with a concealed weapon killed the shooter before the shooter could inflict any more damage.” None. Zero. One “witness” in Miami killed a shooter back in 1982, but only as the shooter was running away.

SlateWhen bullet dispensers work too well, psychopaths kill more people, it’s just that simple. The Hill: Jared Lee Loughner, who killed six people and wounded 13, was tackled to the ground when he had to stop to reload.  No, it’s not a slippery slope! Make the killers stop to re-load every two or three seconds (assuming 5-6 rounds per second) so heroes can do their jobs and stop them.Magazine capacity limits are the reasonable starting point for discussion of gun control tools of mass-murder restrictions.

When even Rupert Murdoch is asking for tighter gun control you know the beams have crossed, Ridiculous has intersected the Sublime and we’ve crossed over into Twilight Zone. Murdoch is in a unique position to do some lasting good here, let’s see if he will step up to the challenge of shaping public opinion toward rational levels of gun control, making mental health care routinely available  for all and promoting non-violence instead of the hyperbolic tripe he usually peddles.

The Onion has it’s finger on the pulse of the nation again. Sometimes pathos and parody are one and the same and the only truth you can find.

On this morning’s NBC’s Meet the Press, host David Gregory stated, “A note here this morning: we reached out to all 31 pro-gun rights senators in the new Congress to invite them on the program to share their views on the subject this morning. We had no takers.”

St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Newtown was evacuated in mid-memorial service after a phone threat. No shortage of sick puppies out there. Hope they attach the phone to the side of his head with a really long nail.

Here in Oklahoma on Friday, a pathetic loser planning a school massacre was arrested after getting fingered by a fellow student he’d attempted to recruit to his plot. We’ve got to encourage this kind of virtuous snitching.

In other world violence news, the Washington Post reports Syrian jets bombed the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus on Sunday. The camp has been a stronghold of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine — General Command, which backs the Assad regime. A resident of the camp said the Syrians fighting inside Yarmouk were not with the FSA but with Islamist units. “We have Jabhat al-Nusra and other Salafis and extremist Islamic groups who look different,” said Yaser Kashlat, “They carry guns and swords at the same time.” Sounds like they’ve packed a lunch and are planning to stay a while.
