Spill, baby, spill! So far two major lawsuits have been filed against ExxonMobil for their Pegasus pipeline rupture in Mayflower, AR. Although the pipeline was 60 years old and designed to carry light crude, Exxon was pumping highly corrosive tar sands oil (or diluted bitumen, “dilbit”) at a flow-rate higher than it was designed carry, according to one suit. The break contaminated Lake Conway, a tributary of the Arkansas River and the biggest man-made lake in the country, and the ecological hazards of the spill, which the lawsuit says Exxon actively attempted to cover up in wholesale fashion, are nothing short of catastrophic.
